Pastors
Our church was founded in 1897 with our first pastor Richard Vande Kieft. He came to Pella from the Netherlands in 1895 and become an ordained pastor in 1898, one year after starting to minister at Pella II. He continued to minister with us until he left for another congregation in 1907.
Rev. E. Vander Berge served from 1908-1911. Rev. Vander Berge served earnestly, but his work, apparently was variously received; certainly it can be said that there are difficult adjustments for churches to make after the excitement of beginning a new venture wears off. |
Rev. J. Fles served from 1911-1915. Rev. Fles promoted the challenging yet visionary work of Christian Education. Due to age and the poor health of his wife, he retired from the ministry while here. |
Rev. G. Haan served from 1915-1921. Rev. G. Haan introduced the evening service, and led us in worship twice each Sunday, as we have been doing ever since. He also was the first to lead our worship in the English language, being ordered to do so during the First World War. |
Rev. H. Walkotten served from 1921-1925. Rev. Walkotten led us in considering new building plans that were made necessary because of a large influx of members from the First CRC. Sadly, he died in office before we could proceed with him. |
Rev. D. Hollebeek served from 1925-1933. Rev. Hollebeek served us during our "unsettled" period, while the new church building and parsonage were built, and a new Wurlitzer organ installed. Our membership reached 80 families. |
Rev. M. Monsma served from 1933-1943. Rev. Monsma served us for nine years, built well on the work of his predecessors, and led us to more than 100 families in size. |
Rev. T. Verhulst, our eighth pastor, served from 1943-1948. Rev. Verhulst continued to bring about spiritual and numerical growth, and led us to celebrate our 50th anniversary in 1947. |
Rev. H. Vander Kam served from 1950-1955. Rev. Vander Kam led in the work of starting a third Christian Reformed Church in Pella, and, in spite of this work, still led us to grow to our numerical peak of 180 families! Rev. Harold Bossenbroek, Bible Instructor at the Christian High School, provided valuable help for a number of years. |
Rev. H. Van Laar served from 1956-1961. Rev. Van Laar served us faithfully, and at the conclusion of his five years with us, retired from 38 years of service in the ministry. |
Rev. B. T. Haan served from 1961-1964. Rev. B. T. Haan applied his gifts to our work. Unfortunately, after only a short time together we experienced difficulties, and with sadness parted ways. But the Lord continued to bless us, and show us his mercy. |
Rev. A. Zylstra served from 1965-1970. Rev. Zylstra led us to a renewed enthusiasm for mission work: in 1967 Rev. Bill Van Tol was ceremonially ordained and installed as a missionary to Nigeria. Several decades later we continue supporting him and his wife Laura in mission work. Shortly after Rev. Zylstra left us, Jason Chen was ordained in our church and began his work in Iowa City, which he continued through 2005. |
Rev. H. Peterson served from 1972-1980. Rev. Peterson served us almost eight years before retiring from the ministry. We now support his daughter Nancy, and her husband, Lloyd Peckham, in the work of the Wycliffe translators. |
Rev. B. Leiter served from 1980-1984. Rev. Leiter started his ministry with us, and served well and with compassion for four years. |
Rev. P. Hoekstra served from 1985-1990. Rev. Hoekstra arrived to serve us as his second charge, and brought us to enthusiastically worship and serve in the kingdom. |
Rev. G. Mouw served from 1990-1995. Rev. Mouw kept us alert with his booming voice and great enthusiasm for the gospel. His wife, Gerry, also brought her gifts into prominent service as a leader of youth and the choir. |
Rev. Wm. Zeilstra, our seventeenth pastor, served from 1995-2006. Rev. Zeilstra served eagerly, and with us had blessings from a merciful God. He led us in our centennial celebration, led us the final five years of the millennium and six years into the next. |
| Pastor Dan Brouwer has served from 2007-present. |
